Caring for Sterling Silver

All of our jewelry is made with .925 sterling silver. Sterling silver is a softer metal by nature, which means it can develop light scratches, nicks, and signs of wear over time. This is normal and part of owning a handmade piece.

To care for sterling silver:

  • Store in a dry place when not wearing
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water and chemicals
  • Use a soft silver polishing cloth as needed

Regular wear can actually help reduce tarnish and keep your silver bright. A silver polishing cloth (purchased from amazon, any jewelry store or from me!) will make quick work of any tarnish. Tarnish means that the silver is real!!

Tarnish & Wear

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time due to exposure to air and moisture. Tarnish is not a defect and does not affect the integrity of the metal.

Because silver is a relatively soft metal, you may notice:

  • Small surface scratches
  • Softening of crisp edges over time
  • A natural patina developing with wear

These changes are part of the story of your jewelry and add to its character.

Turquoise Care

Turquoise is a natural stone and deserves a little extra care. Many turquoise stones are stabilized to improve durability, but they should still be treated gently.

To care for turquoise:

  • Avoid water, chemicals, perfumes, and lotions in direct contact with the stones. Washing your hands is fine, but I would avoid long periods of submersion, like swimming.
  • Remove before bathing, swimming, or heavy activity
  • Hard Impacts CAN and WILL break a stone!
  • Store in a dry place when not wearing
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth

With proper care, turquoise jewelry can be enjoyed for years to come.

What to Avoid

To help protect both the silver and stones, avoid:

  • Swimming or bathing while wearing jewelry
  • Household cleaners or harsh chemicals
  • Lotions, perfumes, or hairspray applied directly to jewelry
  • Heavy lifting or manual labor while wearing rings or bracelets

Storage Tips

When not wearing your jewelry:

  • Store in a dry, airtight container or jewelry pouch
  • Keep pieces separated to avoid scratching
  • Avoid storing in humid environments

  • keep the small black anti tarnish strip included in each package and use if storing for an extended period of time. It will not prevent 100% of tarnish, but it should help!

Proper storage helps reduce tarnish and prevents unnecessary wear.

A Note on Handmade Jewelry

Each piece is made with care and meant to be WORN, not kept perfect in a box. Small marks, scratches, and signs of wear over time are a reflection of a life lived in your jewelry. With proper care, your piece can be enjoyed now and passed down later. Please contact me should you find yourself needing any repairs.
